Ophthalmology - Community Surgery

What is the service?

The overall aim of the service is to provide a high quality ophthalmology service within the community and ensure that the network of GP practices are able to access the services both north and south of the county. 

Referral ( in line with CCG referral guidelines only) for:

  • Blepharitis/Chronic ocular irritation
  • Dry eye
  • Allergic eye disease
  • Watering eyes
  • Minor eyelid lumps and bumps
  • Triaging for ocular hypertension/glaucoma

Surgical Procedures:

  • C101 Excision of lesion of eyebrow
  • C121 Excision of lesion of eyelid
  • C122 Cauterisation of lesion of eyelid
  • C124 Curettage of lesion of eyelid
  • C151 Correction of ectropion
  • C152 Correction of entropion
  • C273 Irrigation of nasolacrimal duct excision of Meibomian cyst
  • Punctoplasty
  • All simple entropion correction (procedures to be done as recommended by Oculoplastic specialists)

Eligibility and Exclusions

The Ophthalmology Service will assess that the patient is appropriate for the proposed surgery. If in the opinion of the provider clinician is that the patient is not suitable for surgery, and then this decision must be justifiable and must be clearly communicated back to the referrer in writing.

In the event the provider is a GP practice, then the service will be open to both their registered patients and those registered to other GP practices within Nene and Corby CCG catchment area.

Patients will be referred into the service via the E- referral system and be offered a choice of provider.


  • Any treatment or surgery carried out for cosmetic reasons or those included in the Individual Funding Request policy
  • Ocular motility disorders
  • Cataract
  • Post cataract surgery problems
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Wet AMD or other complex medical retina pathology
  • Orbital problems
  • Corneal/Anterior segment pathology
  • CVI certification/LVA assessment
  • Confirmed glaucoma
