COVID-19 Outpatient Reset and Recovery

Implementation of the Referral Assessment Service (RAS) on E-Referral

Please note

The Referral Assessment Service is a way to formalise clinical triage across Northamptonshire. Referrals will only be returned if:-

  • The patient is on an incorrect pathway
  • Incorrect or missing information is provided such as required tests
  • 2 week wait and correctional facility patients are not currently on the RAS system

Any returned referrals will be accompanied with a full rationale as to the reason.

Referrals aim to be triaged within 5 working days of receipt.

The triage process is constantly being refined with constructive feedback welcome.

Patient choice will not be affected by the RAS triage service.

Feedback on the service can be given via the GP concerns route on the Primary Care Portal

Phlebotomy Services

The blood taking unit (phlebotomy) has re-opened in its original location on the Northampton General Hospital site, Area H, for paediatric and adult patients.

We have made a change to our service and all patients must now have an appointment to attend the blood taking unit.

Appointments for blood taking can be booked online by clicking here or by going to

The online booking will be open from the 1st September 2020.

If you are unable to book via the online facility, appointments for both paediatric and adult blood taking can be booked Monday to Friday between 9am and 3:30pm by phoning 01604 544190 or 01604 523303

Please Note: If you are having bloods taken for any of the following tests, please ensure that you book a Special Requirements Appointment:

Acute Porphyria Screen, Bullous Porphyria Screen, BCR-ABL, Cortisol, Cytogenetics , DNA Studies, Erythropoietin (EPO), JAK2, Quantiferon, White Cell Enzymes

To minimise the risk to patients during the pandemic, as a temporary measure, patients attending appointments will not need to bring their Pathology Request Form with them. However, patients should bring a request form if they have been given one by their GP practice/Consultant  

The adult phlebotomy service will be from 8am - 4pm Monday to Friday and 8am – 12:30pm on Saturday.

The paediatric phlebotomy service will be from 8am – 11:30am Monday – Friday.

All patients must wear a face coveringmaintain social distancing and must attend alone where possible. The waiting area has limited spaces so please only attend 5 minutes before appointment. If there are any reasons why wearing a face covering or attending alone is not possible patients must inform the team on arrival. Patients must not attend the unit if they are experiencing any covid symptoms

The Blood Taking Unit (BTU) operates as a walk in service provising services for community and hospital clinics. The department sees over 100,000 patients a year.

The department is generally busy between 7.00-8.00 and 9.30-13.00. Some clinics in the hospital refer patients to the blood taking unit. These patients may sometimes take priority and can mean your waiting time is increased. This is done for clinical need and helps us to see our most urgent patients as soon as possible.

Update from the nurses in the Rapid Access Chest pain Clinic April 7th 2020

Please be aware that the 2 week wait rapid access chest pain clinic at Northampton General Hospital is continuing to accept referrals from our colleagues in primary care and the Emergency Department.  These consultations will be triaged and some patients will be assessed via a telephone consultation, whilst others will require a face to face appointment.

To reiterate the criteria are as follows:

Recent onset of symptoms (within past 6 months)

  • Typical angina – chest pain which is effort related, retrosternal and relieved within 10 minutes by rest or GTN
  • Atypical angina – chest pain with 2 out of 3 of the above characteristics
  • Non-specific chest pain in higher risk patients – chest pain which does not meet the criteria for typical or atypical angina and does not have an obvious musculoskeletal or oesophageal cause

Please do not refer patients to us if you suspect Acute Coronary Syndrome.  These patients should be directed to the Emergency department for immediate assessment.

The likelihood of coronary heart disease in men < 40 years and women <60 years with non specific chest pain is <10%

Please make sure a recent ECG and bloods (including cholesterol and Hb) are attached to the referral.

Not all patients will have an exercise test performed.  This will be decided during the consultation.

Urgent referrals into the virtual fracture clinic

The virtual fracture clinic is an internal clinic that NGH orthopaedic doctors do to assess and approve the treatment plan that A and E clinicians set out for patients attending through the emergency department.

GP’s can refer in to us through this generic account for any emergency orthopaedic injury or urgent septic infection. There is no templated form to use, however  this is for emergencies only and will require a full medical history.

Children's Outpatients

Childrens’ outpatients at Northampton General Hospital is now closed for all but absolutely essential appointments - for example children with heart disease or oncological problems.  These appointments will be arranged ad hoc by individual consultants. All the acute consultants have been redeployed to inpatient clinical work.

Existing outpatient appointments (EXISTING NEW and FOLLOW-UP) may be cancelled, moved, or in selected cases, conducted over the telephone.  You will receive copies of any correspondence that is sent to parents.

NEW REFERRALS: These will be screened by a consultant and only the absolutely clinically essential cases will be seen. We strongly recommend that you use Advice and Guidance, telephone via Consultant Connect, or bleep the PAU consultant discuss the referral before it is sent.  Note that Consultant Connect skips us if we are already on a call, and switchboard maybe busy so please persevere.

Restricted Hospital Visiting

We have listened to the concerns of family members over the past few weeks and understand their worries when it comes to having a relative or loved one in hospital, while visiting is restricted. We have set up a relative support line so you can check in on the current condition of a family member or loved one.

In order to use this service, you will need to know the patients full name, ward location, date of birth and NHS number where possible. Our team will then take this information and check in with the ward to obtain details on the patient’s condition. You will then receive a call back with this information.

This line cannot be used for advice on upcoming appointments or admissions, advisers will not be able to answer these questions.
